Why Picture Window Conversions for Your Pool Enclosure are Worth Investing In

Written By Kenneth Wilson  |  2 Comments

The demand for picture windows is on the rise. In one month alone, different people would get this service either on its own, with a pool cage restoration, or a full pool cage re-engineering. This entails taking down their whole pool cage and re-engineering it into a new structure that includes a picture window.

If you ask all the other screen enclosure contractors in our network list, they will likely report the same trend in customer demand.

Maybe you’re still asking, “why should I get one?” We’ll be the first to admit that picture windows are not necessary to have a good, functional pool cage. However, it’s seriously affecting people’s lives in a positive way just by having all the benefits it has to offer. If you’re still undecided, factor in these advantages of picture windows to decide whether or not to get it.

A Modern Design to Beautify Old Pool Cages

A picture window is a single large opening on the sides of the screen enclosure that offer a wide clear view of the outdoors. It’s a modern take of the old and traditional pool cage designs which literally take on the appearance of a cage-like structure.

This modern design makes pool cages more beautiful and appealing because it’s more minimalistic in terms of the aluminum members that disturb the outdoor views. From the outside looking in, it also features a very streamlined appearance of the pool cage, with less metal and more clear screens to feature the best of your outdoor pool area.

Different Layout Options

Every pool cage is different, but there’s a level of mundanity and redundancy in the typical cage-like enclosures. They have a uniform look despite the difference in size, measurements, and overall design.

Picture windows are going to be different every time. Even if they may look the same, it will still be reliant upon the homeowners’ own preferences and size of pool enclosure.

Some prefer having picture windows on all sides of their enclosure, some opt for just one side of the wall. Some can have a full clear view screen wall, while others will require support beams. Regardless, the final design is unique and will give a different kind of experience for each homeowner.

A Clear, Wide and Open Outdoor Views

With picture windows, it draws more attention to what you can see beyond the large screen instead of the structure itself. Instead of focusing on what it looks like, which is already more aesthetically pleasing than traditional pool cages, people are after the actual views that you’re opened up to from the pool area because of the big screened wall opening.

Increased Home Value and Upgraded Lifestyle

Your screen enclosure probably takes up at least a quarter of your whole property, sometimes half or even more. When you upgrade that into something with a more modern design, long-lasting materials, and high quality structure (provided you went to a professional contractor for it), your home’s value instantly rises up too.

This is especially beneficial for people who are looking to sell their homes quickly and for a high price.

Sturdy Structure That Satisfies Florida Hurricane Standards

Every screen enclosure project needs a permit to pass Florida’s standards for hurricane-resilient structures. It’s a requirement for new enclosures as well as re-engineered ones. If you’re looking to change your enclosure to one with a picture window, it’s sure to be sturdy against typical Florida thunderstorms and even hurricanes.

If it’s a new one, there’s always the choice of whether to go for materials with builder’s grade features. Builder’s grade are efficient to get the structure up and standing but they’re no good for a long time.

After a few years, builder’s grade screws are likely to rust throughout and fall off. It’s safe to go with the superior materials on the first go when you go to a credible and reputable contractor.

Bug-Free Space and Damage Resistant Screens

You might be thinking that picture windows are more prone to damage because the screen is too large to hold itself on its own against strong wind pressures.

For picture windows, the screen used is usually a polyester screen with the tiniest gaps in between the threads. It’s designed to be firm against the pressure of strong wind forces, as heavy as 63 pounds.

Simultaneously, the screen is the type that no insect or bug can enter, no matter how little. It’s also resistant of insect scratches, which is also a reason for why screen enclosures acquire holes aside from natural factors.

More Fresh Breeze Into the Pool Area

Having one large screen to cover the entire wall of your pool enclosure definitely gives better ventilation. Multiple panels with aluminum members break up the wind and doesn’t let the same amount of air to blow towards the inside of the pool cage.

It’s the same principle as when mountains break up low pressure areas where clouds are starting to form, but less large-scale than that.

Comes Cheaper with Restoration

Picture window conversions come cheaper when it’s done along with a full pool cage restoration. The whole package may seem like there’s a lot more work, but if you consider the whole timeline of two projects at once, the time spent doing both simultaneously is more efficient than doing just one service — just a pool cage restoration or just a picture window conversion.

A lot of customers opt for the package because picture windows become less pricey considering the level of upgrade it brings to your whole pool area.

About the Author

I can build it, and I can help you get the patio enclosure you want! I got my start in the Florida patio industry back in the 70s as a young general laborer looking for something to make a few bucks. At the time I never thought it would end up as my career. Over the years I grew beyond the laborer position, becoming a foreman, superintendent, and then into executive management for some of the largest patio contractors, and material vendors. Now into retirement and slightly bored, I offer consulting services to new and existing contractors, and publish this website to help the people who love their patio's and screen enclosures the most - YOU!

  • Are picture window screen enclosure proprietary to each builder/installer? I’ve seen several designs and some contractors tell me they can’t do them due to no access to header beam. Seems like just a larger engineered header.
